LYRICAL AND ABSTRACT WORK BY NURAY ATAS
The artist Nuray Atas, living in Hoorn, presents a number of large canvases . The paintings give a strong impression of spontaneity and are purely abstract. Colors, lines and planes are inter-playing in a lyrical fashion. Nuray Atas (Istanbul, 1942) is a well-known artist in the province of Noord Holland. She has been having art exhibitions regularly. In 1982 she constructed a pyramid-shaped object on a little island in a canal in the town of Hoorn. In the following ten months she took this work through four stages, each stage connected with a season. Both the geometrical basic form and the close relation with nature are essential in her work. She joins the organic and transient aspects of nature with the eternal purity of mathematics. But in her paintings/ too, she unites opposites as are sometimes untitled but clearly refer to emotions. The only recognizable forms are squares or triangles and occasionally there is a suggestion of a landscape. In general the painting is based on a division into a number of large planes. Violent, dynamic, free shapes often overrun this rather austere framework. Yet this does not result in a clash. But rather in a union of the static and dynamic, of reason and emotion. Most paintings are fascinating to look at. Especially when observed from some distance it becomes clear how 'lively' and expressive some compositions are. The compositions are extremely dynamic, intensified by the color contrast. strongly evokes strong associations with landscapes. Above a kind of horizon there is a flaming yellow. But this tendency towards the figurative is contradicted by purely abstract elements. And this makes the latter one of the most interesting works of her, werk.
